Simple Crystal Radio

I've always been fascinated by radio. As a child, I used to "sneak" a transistor radio under my pillow, and see how many far-away stations I could hear on the AM band. Of course, FM wasn't really THERE, yet.

I remember building a crystal radio set. I actually went to the local library to find the instructions. It fascinated me that with just a few simple components and wire antenna, you could actually tune in radio broadcasting signals.

Even if you don't remember "those days," you can still experience the joy of building a simple working crystal receiver.

Experience it - AGAIN - for yourself, or pass the "magic" to youngsters.

Naural Skin Softeners

Grate 1 to 2 small potatoes and soak in olive oil. Apply on dry, cracked hands. Leave the mixture on for about 10 minutes, then rinse off.

You might want to try this homestyle remedy: Drink 2 tablespoons of almond oil mixed in a cup of warm milk. Its believed the calcium and vitamin E will be absorbed internally and mositen your skin. Its also a treatment said to help keep coughs and colds at bay.

Jury Duty (Humor)

I really love a good one line joke. Here's one that struck me as REALLY funny. Unfortunately I don't know who came up with this tid-bit of humor.

"When you go into court, you are putting your fate in the hands of 12 people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty."

I really got a good chuckle out of that one!

Of course, I'm sure I'll be posting some lawyer jokes (down the road), LOL!

Never Buy Stale Bread Again

While at the grocery store, its fairly easy to determine which bread is the freshest, besides squeezing it, of course.

Bread is usually delivered to stores five days a week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Each day has a different colored twist-tie:

Monday: Blue
Tuesday: Green
Thursday: Red
Friday: White
Saturday: Yellow

Its pretty easy to remember. Oh yeah, the breads with those plastic clips follow the same color code system. Its been a long-standing tradition.

Living Longer (Humor)

There's a lot of conflicting medical studies about "living longer," so I found this was rather cute. All of these cultures reportedly suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits or Americans...

Germans drink a lot of beer, eat lots of sausages, as well as fatty foods.

Japanese eat very little fat.

Italians drink large amounts of red wine and eat a lot of pasta and cheese dishes.

Africans drink very little red wine.

Mexicans eat a lot of fatty foods.

I guess one of the conclusions you can draw from this is: Eat and drink whatever you like. Apparently its speaking English that kills you. :-)

Gas Mileage Tips

In these times of increasing gasoline prices, here are a few tips that could save you a bit of money.

Check your tires, because you car's engine has to work harder to get under-inflated tires rolling.

This, kind of, ties in with the tip below: Try and drive at a constant speed. I know alot of drivers who think its a "roller coaster" ride.

Go easy on the gas and brake pedals. Cut back on rapid accelerations and sudden braking. Gradually "giving it the gas," as well as slowly braking, will give you more miles out of a tank of gasoline.

The less weight you have in your vehicle, the less work the engine has to do. Pack light for trips.

This one needs no explanation, actually. Keep up with regular vehicle maintenance. Regular tune-ups and oil changes are basic common sense. Remember to regularly check your air filer and belts.
