Stuffing
Also Known as Dressing
In cooking, stuffing or dressing is, basically, an interchangeable term. Stuffing/Dressing may be used as a side or used to fill a cavity in another food item, like pultry, meats, vegetables, or various fruits. By the way "stuffing" appears to be being the prefered term used in both the South and Eastern parts of the U.S.
.
Many popular American stuffings normally consist of breads or cereals, mixed together with vegetables, spices, and herbs. In the Southern states, conrbread is traditionally used, as well as favored during the holiday season.
Surprisingly, almost anything can be used as a stuffing. For example, oyster stuffing was reortedlypopular in the nineteenth century and is still used today. Italians seem to prefer sausage in their stuffing. With Germans, fruit (particularly apples) and potatoes are favored. Middle Eastern vegetable stuffings are usually based on seasoned rice, minced meat, or a combination.
I prefer home-made stuffing, but many companies around the world offer packaged stuffing mixes that can be baked, cooked on your stovetop, or even microwved and they take just a few minutes to prepare.
You'll also see animals stuffed with other animals. An interesting note on this, particularly around the Thankshiving and Christmas holiday season, is "The Turducken." A Turducken is a turkey...stuffed with a duck....THEN...stuffed with a chicken. creation.
